A Special Remembrance for Donna L. Carter

June 3rd at 2:00 pm at the Bucksport Senior Center, there will be a special remembrance ceremony for Donna L. Carter.

Mary Jane Bush:

"Donna Carter died on February 24, 2023. She left her family, friends, and community wanting to say one last goodbye and thank her for a life well lived.

Donna forged many paths in her lifetime whether it was driving a big rig cross country or driving a neighbor to a medical appointment. She never wavered from a challenge to do something she never tried. Despite the physical challenges that she endured later in her life, she always rose to the occasion becoming an inspiration to those whose lives she touched.

In 2016 Donna was interviewed by Irwin Gratz from Maine Public Radio in her role as Chair of the Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition’s Senior Resource Committee. Donna explained to Mr. Gratz, one of the challenges is getting older people to register for services. "There's a lot of people out around we find that we can't reach. And we know they're there and we know who a lot of them are. But their age and their pride keep them from asking." In her role as a dedicated community volunteer Donna helped scores of people overcome such circumstances through her volunteer efforts with Bucksport Area Senior Center, CARE, Faith in Action, town committees, and so many other organizations. Most close to her heart were her friends at the Bucksport Area Senior Center. For many years she warmly greeted diners to the center’s weekly luncheons. On weekends she helped to organize country western musical concerts. She was the ultimate “utility player” who could always be counted on to help in a pinch.

In her role as Chair of the Senior Resource Committee Donna traveled round the state telling the Bucksport story of achievements to help older adults. She and other committee members organized walk-abouts for town councilors and business owners to understand the challenges of walking or using a wheel chair on Main Street and other locations. These educational efforts resulted in numerous accessibility improvements along Main Street. She was particularly pleased when Dino Kisamitakkis, owner of the Bucksport House of Pizza, installed a ramp at his business entrance. She was especially delighted to present an award to Mr. Kisamitakkis at the Bucksport Area Chamber of Commerce Annual meeting recognizing his efforts.

Donna was a “true blue” citizen of Bucksport. Her family and friends will miss her greatly. We are a better community because of her generosity and love."
