The Merit Award
1. Written Policy meets the Workplace Smoking Act of 1985 - Use of cigarettes, pipes, cigars is prohibited except in designated areas that are separately vented and also prohibited in employer vehicles; and
2. Promote tobacco-free lifestyles by providing employees with self-help materials or referral information on quitting tobacco use; and
3. Signs are posted that state the tobacco policy.

The Quality Award
1. Meets Merit Award; and
2. Written policy provides for a tobacco-free building and no tobacco use within 25 feet of all entrances, air intake and walkways. Tobacco use includes any tobacco product - including cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chew, snuff, and spit;and
3. Written policy provides some level of coverage on a one time basis for cessation services through Health Insurance coverage or employer reimbursement - i.e.: medications, cessation classes, etc.

The Excellence Award
1. Meets Quality Award; and
2. Written policy provides for a tobacco-free property; and
3. Written policy includes provisions for enforcement and communicating the policy to all employees on an annual basis; and
4. Written policy provides on-going full coverage for cessation services through Health Insurance coverage or employer reimbursement - i.e.: medications, cessation classes, etc.- either on or off-site.

Work Tobacco-Free

1. Begin with step one of the three step criteria provided by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse Work Alert Strategy: Involve key employees for input and service. An important note in developing a Drug-Free Workplace Program: involve representation from all levels within your company, from entry-level employees to managers, team leaders, division heads, and upper-level management. It is wise to have whoever is going to be covered by the policy represented. If your employees are unionized, you will need to involve the union throughout the process.

Your organization’s drug-free workplace policy is the backbone of your program. As you move through the Policy Development section of the Program Builder, you will be asked to choose program and policy options for your organization. Some statements will be automatically incorporated into your policy as they are standard and recommended. Other statements are entirely optional, and you may choose to select or omit sections depending on your organization’s needs.

The Excellence Award
1. Meets Quality criteria and,
2. Completes step three of the three step criteria provided by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse Work Alert Strategy: Share and enforce policy with all employees. Clear communication about the importance and benefits of a drug-free workplace to employees is essential to the success of the program. Begin with the formation of the workgroup and the development of the policy. Be sure to communicate the value the organization places on the personal health of employees, their families, and their communities. Announce (e.g., with a letter to all employees from the CEO) that having a drug-free workplace and preventing drug and alcohol problems among your employees and their families is a major corporate emphasis.

Encourage Physical Activity

The Merit Award
1. Employer utilizes “point of decision” prompts and/or other signs to encourage employees to incorporate physical activity into the workday

The Quality Award
1. Meets Merit Award; and
2. Written policy in place that supports exercise and recreational activities; and
3. Employer provides subsidies for employee memberships to fitness centers or other physical activity related programs or supplies.

The Excellence Award
1. Meets Quality Award; and
2. Worksite creates/identifies/promotes indoor and outdoor walking routes and public places for physical activity, including indoor areas for physical activity/exercise.
3. Distribute information and materials to educate employees and to support and encourage daily physical activity (fact sheets, local physical activity programs, walking groups, and public places for physical activity)
4. Employees provided with onsite counseling/health coaching and/or incentives for reaching predetermined physical activity goals.

Promote Healthy Eating

The Merit Award
1. Offer healthy alternatives in vending machines/cafeteria/company meetings and promote nutrition and weight management programs.
2. Provide staff refrigerator which is easy to do, allows brown bag lunches, etc.

The Quality Award
1. Meets Merit Award; and
2. Written policy in place that supports healthy food options and promotes nutrition and weight management pro grams; and
3. Provide incentives for participating in nutrition or weight management
4. Healthy snacks identified on machines (not just that some are available in the machine).
5. Honor system healthy snack program in place (someone purchases a selection of items, staff pay as they take items).
6. Vending machines available for items such as yogurt, milk or healthy sandwiches; water, 100% fruit juice, 1% or skim milk available.
7. Written guidelines available for food served at meetings (not just policy that supports healthy food options); guidelines say at least 50% foods/meals to be healthy

The Excellence Award
1. Meets Quality Award; and
2. Provides on-site programming to support healthy eating and /or weight management.
3. Not only are healthy snacks identified on machines, nutritional content posted on the machine the nutrition criteria for healthy snack items posted on the machines.
4. Written guidelines available for food served at meetings (not just policy that supports healthy food options); guidelines say 100% foods/meals to be healthy
5. Provide free nutrition and/or weight management programming on or off-site (education, counseling, TOPS, Weight Watchers, etc.).
6. Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling and/or weight control programs.
